Show and Tell Friday

It's time for Show and Tell Friday. If you would like to participate, drop over to Kelli's at There's No Place Like Home.
This is my first time to do this.. I am still learning the camera so just have patience with me... so here goes.........

This is a very old sewing box that belonged to my Grandmom... Ida Potts... she was my best friend and mentor. She taught me to sew and crochet and garden and she taught me of the Lord. She lived to be 99 years old and left here Jan 4, 1996 to go home to be with the Lord and see her son that went home in 1947.

Her little house that she lived in for 50 burned in October 1995 and I am not sure how I ended up with this wonderful treasure but I did. She had this sitting by her old treadle sewing machine and when I was a very young girl I can remember her rooting around in it for buttons or thread or rickrack... or whatever........ some have said that I should have it refinished and have the top fixed, but I just cringe at the thought of someone messing with it..... so it sits in a place of honor in my shop and there it will remain.

I also ended up with her button box which was just a cardboard box that had much smoke damage and was falling apart... so what better place to hide away her buttons than in her sewing box........ When looking at the buttons I can remember some items of clothing belonging to her or my mother or even myself with that exact button. They will remain there in that box and I guess I will have to leave it to my son......... ahahhah I do not have a daughter in law yet or a granddaughter....... soooooooo maybe one of these days there will be a certain someone that will treasure it as I do........ I have other treasures from Grandmother that I will share off and on, but for now I thought you might like to see the lady behind the sewing box. She was the most influential person in my life.

She is the one on the back...... I think she was 94 when this was taken........What a great outlook on life ......... she was a hoot!!!
The other lady is Aunt Lucy........she used to deal out bread around the table like you would a deck of cards...........She made us laugh........We have wonderful memories of her...

This is Ida around the age of 91........ She looks good don't you think?

She was 54 here......... Sharp little lady.......... I do miss her...
I have a devotional written just for her and to her over on my devotional page.. If you have time stop and read about this wonderful woman. It is titled "I Hope So"

Denise,

This is a beautiful show and tell and you did a terrific job. I love that old sewing box and I don't blame you for not refinishing it. That would spoil the originality.

Love the photos of your Grandma. Imagine, riding that thing at 94. I'll be lucky if I can walk... but doubt I will make it anywhere near that age.

Thanks so much for sharing. Loved my visit with you today.

Blessings,
Mary

Thanks for the comment about my sewing project! I still have a lot to learn, but I'm getting there. I'm saving up my questions. :)

I have one of grandma's old sewing boxes too. It's much smaller than the one you have. It has pieces of a quilt she and mom worked on together. I've worked on it some too. It's the flower garden pattern I think. She gave it to me when I was in high school and had a sewing project to work on. Most of the fabric she had cut is from the 70's. I think I'll have a hard time finishing it and making it all look like it's from the same decade!

Just wanted to add, I remember going through all of grandma's buttons when I would visit her. She had jars and boxes full of them. Brandy and I used to love just looking at them.

I love it. All of it. Especially the part about her being your best friend. I hope my granddaughter has memories like that of me someday. We sew and learn together all the time and have such a wonderful time.

Denise,
This was the sweetest post I've seen. There is nothing that touches my heart like memories shared of our Grandparents...
She looked so young...I bet it had something to do with the outlook on life she had.
I chuckled out loud when I saw her and your aunt on that 3-wheeler!!
I also had an Aunt Lucy. She lived right beside us you could hear her every now and then get the ice trey out and with an icepick hammer away for some ice.
A person can tell right away how much she meant to you by the way you speak of her. Glad you have so many wonderful memories of her.

It is so strange that you posted this... because I have this unusual fascination with buttons... My grandmother kept, collected or whatever it is that you do with buttons...

Now.. take this bit of information.. I RARELY sew on buttons.. but I love them and keep them.. and I have them in my sewing box..

I RARELY sew...

I would love to have a Button box... for all my zillion buttons...

isn't that just too weird...

My be a memory thing about my grandmother.. I will sometimes get out my bottons and just look at them..

You may not have a grandchild yet to pass that down to but never undersestimate the power of a Grandma!Yours sounds absolutely delightful! My own Grandma was a reap toot herself! She went home to Jesus nearly 8 years ago and I think ablout her all the time! She was a huge influence on me and is my role model for my own grand-daughters, all 4 of them! How special, loved your S&T today!

You did awesome on your first show and tell. It appears as though we've started our own game of telephone tag. Guess I'm it. I'll try again on Sunday.

Good Evening Denise,
I so love the Sewing Box that belonged to your Granmother. "THANK YOU" for sharing it with us. I'm like you, I would just leave it the way it is. It makes it look more antique that way. To have some buttons from her still is a great treasure indeed. My Mom used to collect buttons, but I don't know if she still does or not. She used to keep hers in glass jars. I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your Grandma and your Aunt. Your Grandmother looks mighty happy being on that 4-wheeler. She had alot more guts than I have. LOL. I don't mind riding them as long as the driver doesn't drive too fast. I bet that was so neat watching your Aunt deal bread. I've never heard or seen anything like that before. "THANK YOU" for sharing such a wonderful tribute to your Grandmother and Aunt with us. I did enjoy it. Take care my friend and have a great evening. May God Bless You and Yours.

Love & Hugs,
Karen H.
